Why I bought GeorgeMoen.tel and why you will get yours!

My Success is all because of the network I built. So what do I do about it? Or, Dot Tel (.tel): Why I bought www.georgemoen.tel and why you will get yours!

I can remember the first time I was asked if I had an Email address on the Internet. I was at a Christmas party hosted by a Fortune 500 company and the biggity-wiggities were all going to a training session in Europe (BTW: It was Nestlé). I grasped the concept fairly quickly and wondered if this thing called EMail over the Internet was going to catch on. It was about 6 months later I got my first email address, and within a few months I was involved in my first Internet-related business. I have seen a lot since then: the Dot Boom & Crash, Web 2.0, mission-critical net-based applications that my companies and I could not survive without.

Just when you think nothing new could come along to grab your interest, .tel comes along. I have to admit I did not quite get it at first, but within a few days of my first introduction, I had one of the rare A-Hah moments…

REBGV .TEL Article

Dot-Tel? Do tell…

A new addition to the ever-growing lexicon of top- level domains (such as .com, .org, .edu, etc…) could be a worthwhile tool for you. REALTORS® and/or offices can register .tel domains to set up a webpage that acts like an online business card. Contact information appears for every point of communi-cation you choose to make public, from telephone numbers and office addresses to Facebook, Twitter and other social mediums. All .tel addresses can be accessed through any internet enabled device, and .tel sites are specially optimized for viewing on mobile devices. The people at .tel have created a three-minute video ex-plaining what it is and how to get started. Check it out at http://telForRealtors.com

This article has been reproduced from the August 14 edition of the REal Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s bi-weekly newsletter, RealtorLink. We would like to extend our thanks to REBGV for helping to raise awareness of .TEL in the Vancouver Realtor community.

We Got Scot!

One of the best things about a new community is the people you meet.

As part of the .TEL for Realtors project, we wanted a way to quickly communicate the value of .TEL in a way that was simple to understand and which focussed on the benefits rather than the technology. Through our .TEL community we found Scot Ritchie.

Scot Ritchie IllustrationYou may not know Scot Ritchie by name but you’re almost certain to know his work. Scot is a professional, award winning illustrator living here in Vancouver, but his work is seen in publications around the world. His client list includes some of the biggest publications and leading companies in the world including New York Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Penguin, Readers Digest, Macleans, IBM, AT&T, Xerox and Verizon wireless, to name but a few.

Scot kindly took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about One Vancouver and what we were trying to accomplish.

“I really like the idea of .TEL and what the One Vancouver team are doing”, says Scot. “My work as an illustrator is about communication and conveying ideas. .TEL is all about improving communication and getting your contact information out there fast… I felt it was a great fit. “

“In Vancouver there’s a lot of great people and businesses. The better we can connect the more we’re a real community. It feels good to be part of that.”

Scot has already begun to work up some initial ideas which immediately capture the simplicity of .TEL while managing to create a message specifically for Realtors. We’ll be running Scot’s illustrations in Realty Link in Print next month, so make sure you pick up a copy at your local real estate office.

New .TEL Service Helps REALTORS®

Reprinted from the BCREA eBulltetin August 2009. One Vancouver would like to extend our sincere thanks to the British Columbia Real Estate Board for taking the time to inform members and raise awareness about .TEL. bcrea.tel is today’s .TEL of the day.

Looking for an easy way for clients to find your contact information? A new technology called .TEL is an excellent tool for REALTORS® which combines all of an individual’s points of contact to a single online list. This new service uses an easy to remember name such as AmyJones.TEL or BayRealty.TEL and can include telephone numbers, email addresses, fax numbers, web sites, as well as newer contact points such as blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Instant Messaging and even location information. A free .TEL application can also be added to a Blackberry, iPhone or Windows Mobile device to easily store and use .TEL data in a single click, including maps and directions to offices or listings.

Without requiring online hosting or a designer, .TEL names take minutes to set up at a cost of roughly $20. Contact details marked public can be seen by anyone, but personal information, such as home telephone can be marked private and only seen by friends and family. Because .TEL names are unique, once a name such as JohnSmith.tel is taken, only alternatives like JSmith.tel or JohnDSmith.tel are available.

As an effective way to promote an individual’s name and an easy to remember way for clients to locate crucial contact information, .TEL is an excellent new service for REALTORS® to help create long lasting referral relationships.

To learn more about .TEL names, see real examples of local REALTORS®’ .TEL names, download free .TEL address books and check to see if your .TEL name is available, visit www.telForRealtors.com.

Viewing .TEL on Superbook

Superbook is a free iPhone app that can be downloaded from the App Store on your iPhone by searching “Superbook”. This video illustrates navigating three different .TEL records.

The first is Ben.tel, the name associated with the famous .TEL video shot in London and demonstrates navigating through structured data. The second is Cancel.tel, a mini directory of international numbers to call if your credit card is lost and the final shows Telnic.tel, the sponsoring organization behind the .TEL name.

While the demonstration is quite fast in places, it demonstrates how quickly the .TEL name works because it uses such small amounts of data pulled directly from the DNS. All navigation is dynamic and in real time.

If you own Blackberry instead of an iPhone, you can download Hornet from hornet.tel or hornetHub.com.

Oh, and in case you haven’t seen it, here’s the Ben.tel video – a humorous promotion for .TEL.
